Advice
on Selecting a Nutrition & Fitness Program for Children
What to look
for in a program:
- Nutrition
classes taught by a Registered Dietitian
- Exercise
classes taught by an exercise physiologist, certified aerobic instructor,
or other qualified exercise specialist.
- High quality
copy-ready handouts
- No hidden
fees in the purchase price such as annual renewal.
- Updated
material at a reasonable cost with option to purchase.
- Updates
to keep abreast of current nutrition and/or exercise information
- Material
written by Registered Dietitian
- Fun, interactive
program kids enjoy
- Family
involvement
- Well organized,
easy to understand material with ongoing support from the authors
- Nutrition
information based on healthy eating with emphasis on reasonable portion
sizes.
- Acceptance
of size and differences in kids with an understanding of the issues
overweight kids face
- Emphasis
on nutrition and exercise, not weight loss.
- Not a
diet or diet foods, but a lifestyle.
Program
should NOT include:
- Classes
taught by a non-licensed professional
- On going
financial commitment such as manuals, renewal fees, etc.
- Lecture
type material with excessive work pages
